Company Overview
The client is one of the most important South African industrial group active in the production and distribution of minerals and chemical products, with operations serving both industrial and agricultural markets.

Thytronic in South Africa
Thytronic has been active in the South African market for decades thanks to a strong partnership with Dipro. Through Dipro’s commitment and significant relationships in the industry and utilities sectors they have, Thytronic has now important references in the mining, utilities, and major industrial sectors.

Project Context
In the context of upgrading its electrical protection systems in one of its plant, the enterprise evaluated several solutions for reliability, flexibility, and performance. The company required a system capable of integrating advanced protection functions while maintaining compatibility with existing infrastructure.

Why Thytronic
The group selected Thytronic as its preferred supplier for protection relays across its facilities, thanks to very strong support with application of XMR relays, support with FAT, SAT and training done by our partner Dipro in South Africa and several key advantages offered by the XMR series:

  • Modular Architecture: The XMR platform allows multiple functionalities to be implemented on a single device through the installation of additional software packages. This modularity simplifies system design and reduces hardware complexity.

  • Arc Flash Protection: A standout feature of the XMR series is its Arc Flash function. The Thytronic Arc Flash system uses light-based detection to identify luminous signals generated during arc events. It can detect faults in as little as 2 ms, or 4 ms when conditioned by a current threshold, enabling fast and reliable intervention while minimizing arc energy. To avoid false tripping due to spurious light signals, the system can be configured to trigger only when a light flash is accompanied by a current increase. This dual-condition logic is managed via the ThyVisor software, ensuring high selectivity and operational reliability.

  • Customization Support: Thytronic was also appreciated for its ability to tailor solutions to specific customer needs. In this case, Thytronic developed a custom PLC code that identifies the fault location across different phases, improving diagnostics and reducing downtime.
Outcome
Thanks to these features—modularity, advanced protection functions, selective logic, and customization capabilities—Thytronic was chosen as the preferred supplier for protection relays in its industrial plants. The collaboration reflects Thytronic’s commitment to delivering reliable, adaptable, and customer-focused solutions for complex electrical systems.
